Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about Stat!, from when new puzzles arrive and how streaks work to Stat! Pro, ads and privacy.
What is Stat!?
Stat! is a set of four daily medical puzzles: Syndrome, Traits, Associations and Tangent. Each exercises a different clinical skill, from working up a case to finding a structure in the body. Our How to play guides explain each game in detail.
Is Stat! free?
Yes. The daily puzzles are free on the website and in the apps. The website is supported by ads. In the iPhone and iPad app, the optional Stat! Pro subscription adds extra modes and removes ads.
When do new puzzles come out?
At midnight in your local time zone. Syndrome, Traits and Associations each have one new puzzle a day; Tangent has three, one for each tier: organs, bones and muscles, and vessels and nerves.
Does everyone get the same puzzle?
Yes. Everyone plays the same daily puzzles on the same date, which makes it easy to compare results with friends. In Associations, the cards are shuffled differently for each player.
Can I play puzzles from previous days?
Yes. The archive lets you replay any past day. It is free on the website, and part of Stat! Pro in the apps.
Do I need an account?
No. Stat! has no accounts or sign-in. Your progress, statistics and streak are stored on your device or in your browser, so clearing your browser data will reset them, and progress on the website and in the app is kept separately.
How do streaks work?
Your streak counts consecutive days on which you finished at least one daily puzzle, whether you solved it or not. It stays alive until the end of the following day, so you have all of tomorrow to keep it going. Archive games do not count toward your streak.
Can I share my results without spoiling the puzzle?
Yes. Sharing a result shows the game, whether you solved it, your time, your tries and your hints. It never shows the answer.
What are hints, and do they cost anything?
Hints reveal part of the answer when you are stuck: a hidden finding in Syndrome, a trait of the hidden disease in Traits, or cards from a group in Associations. You get two per game in Syndrome and Traits and three in Associations, and they never use up a try. Tangent has no hints.
What does Stat! Pro include?
Stat! Pro is an optional monthly or yearly subscription in the iPhone and iPad app. It includes the full archive, unlimited freeplay by body system or structure type, online games against a friend, unlimited hints and no ads. The daily puzzles stay free without it.
Why does the website show ads?
Ads keep the daily puzzles free to play in the browser. On larger screens they sit in the margins beside the game, and on phones a small banner appears on the home and menu screens, never over a puzzle. Google, our advertising partner, may use cookies to show ads; the privacy policy explains how this works and how to opt out of personalized ads.
Is there an Android app?
Stat! for Android is currently in testing on Google Play and will be available soon. In the meantime, the website works well in Chrome and other Android browsers.
Is Stat! medical advice?
No. Stat! is an educational game. Cases are simplified on purpose and do not describe real patients, and nothing in the games or on this site should be used to make decisions about anyone's health. If you have a health concern, talk to a qualified clinician.
How are the puzzles made?
Every puzzle is drawn from a library built for the game: 250 diseases across ten body systems, each with its traits and clinical findings, and 349 anatomical structures placed on a map of the body. Read more on our About page.
